Monster Hunter meets city pop
Creator Comment:
Retro Design + Monster Hunter: World
I drew the Handler and a Felyne relaxing and enjoying the view at the gate
by the Canteen in Monster Hunter: World.

I imagined the Handler looking at the gate from the Canteen,
watching as the Hunter gets ready for another hunt.
The concept behind the CCL brand was to come up
with a design that meshes with everyday life.
Since I was also tasked with bringing a retro feel to a picture
of the Handler and a Felyne, I went with a softer city-pop color scheme
for a more chill vibe.

I pushed myself to go for this more positive,
chill vibe that didn't overly focus on the chill part.
After getting some pointers from more experienced designers,
I was able to brush up the final version.
I hope the charm of the Monster Hunter series comes through,
and that people find a place for the design in their daily lives.

We challenged the designer by requesting a blend of Monster Hunter with city pop.
I was surprised by how the first design struck me.
Right around the time the transition from draft to final piece was happening,
there was a Yusuke Nakamura exhibit at Abeno Harukas,
so I suggested the designer go for some possible inspiration.
As it turned out, she's a huge Nakamura fan,
and was able to use his work to relay her direction for the piece both verbally
and visually, which really worked out in the end.
